History

bordeaux-churchold-churchbishop-and-sis-shouldersOur church had its beginning in 1940. Our early founders were D.J. Gulley, George Boaz, Thomas Robertson and their families. These brothers met with Coulter Baggett and shared their burden concerning the need for a place to worship. Brother Baggett was asked if he would consider becoming their pastor and help oversee in a building program for a place to worship. Brother Coulter Baggett agreed and a meeting was held to discuss a building plan.

A lot was purchasd on the corner of Third Avenue South at Cameron Street in South Nashville. A tent was erected on the back of this lot and services were held while the church was under construction. The building was completed that year and was known as “Jesus Only Tabernacle”. We worshipped at that site until 1961. During this time, we had several pastors including the following: James H. Thornon, Warren Larry and Tommy Cypert. In 1958 Brother Billy D. Shoulders became pastor.

By the year 1961, we had grown to a place that we needed a larger facility. We sold this building and moved across town to the Bordeaux area where we purchased a basement church on West Trinity Lane. We changed the name of the church to “First Pentecostal Church of Bordeaux”. We worshipped in that building and steadily grew. Our plans were to enlarge by building a new sanctuary on top of this basement building.

When this building became no longer adequate, we were faced with the decision to go with our originla plans and build a new sanctuary on top of this building or to relocate and build a new facility from the ground up. The decison was made to relocate and build a new building. The site chosen for this new building was on the corner of Broadmoor and Maplewood Lane in North East Nashville. We moved into this building in December of 1969. The decision was made to rename this new builing to “First Apostolic Church”.

We have now been at this location for 40 years. In 2001, under the diection of Pastor Billy Shoulders we added a Family Life center to our property which holds 9 classrooms, an evanglist quarters, a full kitchen and a  gymnasium. Since being in that facility we have seen numerous moves of God, sould added to the church and a tremendous impact on the community. In November 2003, then Pastor Billy Shoulders  promoted Brother DJ Shoulders to Senior Pastor, while he took the office of Bishop as an overseer of the congregation.

Beginning in 2009, a new sanctuary will be erected on the property which will double the seating capacity. We know his coming is eminent and we are fulfilling the great commission of Christ. We will occupy until He comes.
